Welcome to ATSP Innovations

ATSP Innovations LLC was formed in 2010 and has laboratory and offices located in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) Research Park. The company is engaged in developing and commercializing a new family of resins (Aromatic Thermosetting coPolyesters, i.e. ATSP) that demonstrate robustness in severe thermal and mechanical environments and thus can be introduced into many applications with demanding performance and lifetime requirements.

Development of the ATSP family of resins heralds a major advance for the field of wear and lubrication. For example, ATSP coatings can be applied to air-conditioning and refrigeration compressor tribological surfaces. Surface treatments/coatings are key to improving wear performance and durability in a wide range of applications. The problems associated with use of liquid lubricants, hard/soft coatings are well known but only modest progress has been achieved partly due to lack of research on new material systems. ATSP Innovations, with team partner UIUC, produced and tested highly effective wear resistant coatings by blending ATSP with Teflon® and other tribologically beneficial additives. The main advantages of these polymeric-based coatings are their excellent wear resistance, relatively low cost, and simple substrate surface conditioning (i.e., no need for expensive surface preparation before coating). ATSP-based coatings have broad market appeal with obvious major societal impact as engines, pumps and compressors are vital equipment that drives a fair share of the United States energy demand.

The impact of this new polymer could also extend into multiple areas and applications such as structural composites in areas ranging from launch vehicles to commercial automobiles, as well as low dielectric constant circuit boards for microelectronics, rigid structural foams, and ablative material for reentry vehicles. A further attractive feature of this technology is the potential for recycling, which is very unique for a thermosetting polymer matrix.

ATSP Innovations has first sale

ATSP Innovations has had its first sale of material to CU Aerospace. This sale is in support of a recently awarded SBIR from the U.S. Navy to develop fiber-reinforced composite materials with ablative properties.
